Agile In Wall Street

Sergio Bogazzi

Over the past decade, the financial services industry and the capital markets as a whole have shifted to an electronic form of buying and selling stocks known as Electronic Trading.

Innovations in technology, changing market structure as well as new regulation have led all market participants to engage in an all out low-latency, high-speed electronic trading war.

Electronic trading systems depend on real-time streaming market data with rates surpassing 800,000 messages per second as well as quick firing algorithmic trading platforms, capable of processing and firing thousands buy/sell orders per second.

In order to enable these electronic trading strategies, Wall Street turned to high-performance computing technologies that have the network bandwidth and processing capacity to handle peak trading volumes.

Successfully designing and developing high-performance electronic trading technologies is challenging in itself. Even more challenging is the compressed time frames required to introduce these systems into production.

Agile software development techniques have proved to be key enablers of these high-performance trading solutions.

This presentation will introduce the key agile software development techniques that enable this type of software development on Wall Street.
